Celebrate the 4th of July in New England

25th June 2018
Every year the forth of July – which marks American Independence Day – celebrations take place around America, with fireworks, parades, picnics, barbeques and more. As a holiday centering on family and friendship, what better way to spend it than in good company on a yacht? New England is one of the USA’s most popular cruising grounds for superyachts and many will make sure to time their charter around the popular Fourth of July holiday to make the most of the busy vibrancy that it brings to the region. Already laden with history, New England is the perfect setting to spend the holiday and there are plenty of options to help you get into the spirit of the day.

Officially a holiday since 1941, celebrations for the Fourth of July date even further back to the American Revolution in the 18th Century. If it’s history you are into then Bristol, Rhode Island, has the most unique parade – it is the oldest Fourth of July celebration in the States, dating all the way back to 1785. Enjoy watching the parade, which showcases America’s long history, before the spectacular fireworks display in the evening. Rhode Island’s celebrations actually kick off three weeks earlier on Flag Day (June 14) meaning that there is plenty in the calendar if you are cruising this popular region throughout June and July.

Up and down the New England coastline you will be spoiled for choice with events in all the most popular destinations, including Martha’s Vineyard, Falmouth and The Hamptons, each offering their own unique and welcoming celebration. Parades, fireworks form the heart of any self-respecting Independence Day party and all around the region displays compete to be the best. Boston’s display is probably the best known in America and the famous Boston Pops Concert and fireworks is accompanied by a live symphony orchestra. Wherever you are moored a firework display will not be far away, lighting up the sky and spreading colors across the water. Either enjoy the fireworks from the deck of your yacht, or ask your crew to take you in closer by tender for an even more front seat view.

Sharing food is another much-loved tradition on the Fourth, with a barbeque a popular choice to suit to the warm weather. Ask your crew to prepare you an American themed feast, including fresh local lobster, to enjoy al fresco on the deck. Why not even have your own celebrations with an American themed evening, flying the Stars and Stripes and enjoying good food, friendship and fireworks for the comfort of your yacht?
