A Riviera Playground: The Best Child-Friendly Activities To Do In Monaco

When you think of Monaco, you may immediately think of a glamorous side full of casinos, superyachts, and luxurious indulgence, but there is a family-friendly side.

For those on vacation in this popular French Riviera destination with children in tow, there is plenty to keep them entertained. Here are our favourite activities to do with kids in Monaco:

Oceanographic Museum

The Oceanographic Museum is located on a cliffside in Monaco-Ville. While the architecture alone is impressive, inside there is much to explore. Established in 1910 by Prince Albert I, this iconic institution has many marine world discoveries for all ages. Inside, more than 90 aquariums bring the world’s oceans to life, from vibrant coral reefs to the eerie depths of predator-filled Shark Lagoon.

Kids can marvel at technicolor tropical fish, stroke starfish in touch pools, and watch sea turtles glide past. Be sure to visit the rooftop terrace here, giving you one of the best panoramic views in Monaco, with an al fresco cafe.

Exotic Gardens of Monaco

Escape the buzz of Monte Carlo’s waterfront with a visit to the Exotic Garden of Monaco, an oasis brimming with towering cacti, succulents, and other drought-defying wonders worldwide. Even those not interested in gardens will enjoy the otherworldly landscapes and views over the coast.

There is also a prehistoric cave carved into the rock at the garden’s base that offers guided tours into its ancient chambers. You can also visit the Anthropology Museum for a fascinating glimpse of Monaco’s earliest human history.

Monaco Top Cars Collection

Car enthusiasts of every age will love the Monaco Top Cars Collection. Originally curated by Prince Rainier III, this extraordinary showroom in the Fontvieille district is a polished display of mechanical elegance and motoring history.

Expect over 100 gleaming vehicles, from Maseratis and Rolls-Royces to classic racing cars and even a few royal horse-drawn carriages. It’s a brilliant, unexpected stop where kids can imagine themselves behind the wheel of a 1950s Ferrari.

Larvotto Beach

For some beach time, head to Larvotto Beach, Monaco’s only public stretch of sand. Fringed by palm trees and clear waters, it’s a relaxing spot for families to unwind.

The shallow, sheltered waters are ideal for beginner swimmers, and a well-maintained playground nearby makes this a firm favorite for children. In peak summer, lifeguards are present, and chic beachside cafés mean parents can enjoy a glass of rosé while the kids build sandcastles or hunt for shells.

Zoological Gardens

For a gentle afternoon adventure, visit the Zoological Gardens of Monaco, a quaint little zoo founded in 1954 by Prince Rainier III. Found in a cliffside setting, this intimate space is home to around 50 species, from black panthers and hippopotamuses to exotic birds and primates.

It’s an easy outing that won’t overwhelm younger children, and the enclosure’s breezy Mediterranean setting makes it a scenic, shaded retreat on hot days.

Le Petit Train

A charming way to take in the sights is the Petit Train, winding through Monte Carlo’s most iconic landmarks, including the Casino, the Palace, and Port Hercules.

Kids love the novelty of this open-air train ride, while parents can get a breezy tour of the city’s highlights.
