Raja Ampat Yacht Charter Guide

Remote, unspoiled, and off the radar, the Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat lies within the Coral Triangle in Southeast Asia. Translating to “Four Kings,” Raja Ampat is made up of four main islands: Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool. In addition to these, there are more than 1,500 islands and cays, full of tropical jungles, pristine beaches, and untouched natural beauty, making the region perfect for yachts.

Protected by UNESCO and home to 80% of the world’s coral species, Raja Ampat is home to one of the most biodiverse marine environments, offering incredible diving and snorkelling opportunities below the surface. Ashore, the jungle-clad limestone karst landscapes are a magnet for the adventurous.

For an authentic experience, visit the small local villages to witness traditional body painting and other unique cultural experiences. An exceptional destination for a yacht charter, providing seclusion, abundant nature, and spectacular scenery at every turn.

Best Time To Visit: The cruising season is from October until April, thanks to the calm seas and best underwater visibility.

Key Cruising Areas: Based out of Sorong, itineraries will depend on weather and currents but typically include the main islands and surrounding areas. The Central islands, like Arborek, to experience local life, the iconic Wayag islands in the north, and the underwater world around the southern Misool islands.

Don’t Miss: Hike to the top of Piaynemo Hill at sunrise, the famous viewpoint is famous for its panoramic views.

Best Spots For Wining And Dining: A huge draw for cruising Raja Ampat is the seclusion, while there are a few eco-resorts with restaurants dotted around, wining and dining is best enjoyed onboard with the chef incorporating local produce. The crew can also set up beach picnics and barbecues.

Best Local Dish: Freshly caught fish is the heart of island cuisine here, served with local, spicy ingredients. Pisang Goreng (banana fritters) are also widely enjoyed in Raja Ampat.

Local Culture: Visit the Tomolol cave, a sacred and significant site for the local Matbat tribe in Misool, and witness the prehistoric cave paintings and the cliff-side burial grounds.

Best Beach: For powdery white sands surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters, visit Friwen Beach. There are also temporary sandbars within the islands, like on Pasir Timbul, where, at low tide, a beautiful beach is uncovered.

IYC Recommends: Spend time exploring the endless scuba diving and snorkelling spots from the yacht, especially in the protected waters of Misool.
