IYC Insider’s Guide To Discovering The Lesser-Known Ionian Islands

Stretching along Greece’s northwestern coastline, the Ionian Sea is one of Greece’s - and the Mediterranean’s - most sought-after yachting destinations. This cluster of iconic islands, covered in lush hills and bordered by white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, has long lured in superyachts.

The island’s geography is made for sailing with a relaxed cruising circuit of relatively short passages, favorable winds, and sheltered anchorages. But for all the headlining-grabbing islands, the Ionian also has a quieter side that most do not get the chance to visit.

While islands like Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, and Lefkada dominate the guides, and rightly so, there are many more, lesser-visited islands beyond these well-trodden highlights that are full of hidden gems. Smaller, quieter islands full of authentic Greek cuisine and culture, traditional villages with minimal development, uncrowded beaches, and isolated anchorages. Here we spotlight our favorite insider spots in the Ionian to include on your next Greek yacht charter itinerary:

Meganisi

Just a short cruise southeast of the well-known Lefkada is Meganisi. This compact, forested island can be easily set apart from its busier neighbour. Characterized by dramatic sea caves and some of the clearest waters in the Ionian, you will wonder why you haven’t visited sooner.

Vathy, one of the three main villages, is the natural arrival point for yachts, with waterfront tavernas offering fresh seafood. While the inland village of Katomeri provides insight into traditional, slower-paced island life.

Anchorages here are exceptional - calm, protected, and quiet in comparison to other islands. Swim off the yacht’s beach club in some of Greece’s most crystal-clear waters or take the tender or paddleboards to explore the surrounding sea caves.

Kastos

One of the smallest inhabited islands in the Ionian, Kastos is home to just one village and harbor, and a relaxed way of life that never feels rushed. The stone houses that line the waterfront with virtually no other developments offer picturesque views and a quaint atmosphere. You won’t find much here, and that is the appeal, with just a few traditional tavernas serving Greek food.

Like Meganisi, the waters here boast excellent visibility and are largely undisturbed, offering great swimming and snorkeling from the yacht. An untouched Greek island experience, it is the ultimate island to enjoy for relaxation and peace.

The Diapontian Islands

Northwest of the widely visited Corfu, the Diapontian islands of Erikousa, Othoni, and Mathraki sit at the edge of Greece’s western side, closer to the Adriatic. The three islands feel genuinely untouched with empty beaches, traditional fishing communities, and wild landscapes.

The largest of the three, Othoni, is full of olive groves and wildflowers with walking trails to abandoned hilltop villages and views across to Italy on a clear day. The beaches are a major highlight, including Aspir Ammos beach, frequently named among the most beautiful hidden beaches in Greece. Erikousa has more sandy beaches perfect for exploring and an idyllic harbor. The lesser-visited of the three, Mathraki, offers an even quieter, wilder experience.

Antipaxos

The tiny island of Antipaxos, just 5 square kilometers and with a permanent population of around 50, has beaches that could rival those of the Caribbean. Voutoumi and Vrika are two of the best, with powder-white sand and turquoise waters perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

Further inland, Antipaxos is full of small family-owned vineyard plots that produce local wine. In peak season, the island attracts day trippers from Paxos and Corfu, so arriving by luxury yacht charter and spending the night at anchor gives you the benefits of having space to yourself in the mornings and evenings. While here, enjoy the beachside tavernas, beaches, and underwater world.

Hidden Ionian Gems: Yacht Charters Beyond The Usual Stops

Kalamos

On the eastern side of the Lefkada channel, you will find Kalamos. An island perfect for those wanting to explore ashore, it has a mountainous landscape covered in pine forests, giving it a wilder feel than other Ionian islands. Largely overlooked, this island has a single, quiet harbor village, and local life is laid-back.

The rugged coastline of Kalamos offers plenty of hidden coves accessible only by yacht and tender, for those who want to explore slowly and anchor in many of the inlets. Kalamos provides a truly authentic Greek experience far from the crowds.
