Kefalonia Yacht Charter Guide

The seven Ionian islands of Kefalonia sit like jewels in the blue Ionian sea. Famed for their unique and varied scenery, excellent food and a rich history, a charter through this cluster of islands is truly special. Kefalonia, the largest of the islands, boasts picturesque coves, striking coastlines and impossibly clear waters. Choose to charter in the month of August and you will be treated to an immersive cultural experience, with a number of religious events and festivals to enjoy on the island.

A private yacht charter will take you to incredible beaches off the beaten track, beautiful scenes made famous in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and towns steeped in history. With the freedom to design your own itinerary, boat hire in Kefalonia will let you explore the islands at your own pace.

Best Time To Visit: The island is warm and dry year-round, but June – August are the hottest months.

Key Cruising Areas: The seven Ionian islands each have a personality of their own, and the calm winds make them ideal for exploring by charter yacht.

Don’t Miss: The Monastery of Agios Gerasimos is a beautiful historic church. Nestled in green woods at the foot of mountains the white walls and terracotta roofs make a stunning image. People come on pilgrimages from all over Greece to visit this monastery, and festivals are held throughout the year.

Best Spots for Wining and Dining: Fiskardo is the only town to have survived the devastating earthquakes of 1953 and is well worth visiting. It has a number of dining options, mostly high-quality, family-run tavernas. Dine at Captain Nikolas – a Kefalonian secret where you will dine on the daily local specialty surrounded by the stunning bougainvillea. Tassia Restaurant is also an excellent choice for fresh seafood.

Best Local Dish: After a short hike around the stunning hilly peninsula of Assos, recharge in the charming village. Fill up at Platanos with a platter of aubergine dip, gigantes, tzatziki, and other local delights, in the shadow of a ruined Venetian castle.

Local Culture: All around the island the traditional architecture and Venetian influences remain and tell the tales of Kefalonian history. For some history with a sad story, visit the Memorial Acqui Division – dedicated to the Italian division of the 2nd World War.

Best Beach:  Anchor at the stunning Myrtos beach, which is known to be one of the prettiest coves in the world. Steep limestone cliffs topped with forest plunge to meet the white pebbled beach. Arrive in the late afternoon to swim and experience a beautiful Ionian sunset.

IYC recommends: 300 years ago a huge earthquake uncovered a hidden cave. Filled with orange stalactites and glass-like stalagmites, the huge Drogarati Cave is a must-see. As you descend the steps, the warm Grecian sun gives way to the cool darkness of the cave, with spectacular acoustics that creates an atmospheric underground world.
