Italy is home to numerous treasured monuments and architectural marvels, but its castles stand out for their captivating allure. Nestled atop grand mountains, set amidst enchanting landscapes, or bordered by waters, these castles and fortresses narrate ancient tales that blur the line between reality and legend.
Fortresses share many similarities with castles; both are fortified constructions with thick walls and towers. They are often found in picturesque villages or historic centers that conjure images of princesses, knights, and epic battles. Below is a list of some of the most mesmerizing ones.
Located in the province of Siena, the imposing Monteriggioni Fortress attracts over 70,000 visitors annually, drawn by its majesty and grandeur. This notable Tuscan castle is a natural tourist attraction, showcasing its splendor to all who come.
It's no surprise that one of its most distinguished visitors from Florence, the great Dante Alighieri, was so moved by its presence that he immortalized it in verse. Inspired by Monteriggioni, Dante envisioned the giant figures in the abyss of Malebolge in Dante’s Hell.
The castle stands on an islet and is connected to the historic Borgo di Celsa, now known as Ischia Ponte, by a masonry bridge. Thanks to Alfonso V of Aragon, access to the castle is made possible through a tunnel carved into the rock.
Previously, entry could only be gained from the sea. The 400-meter-long tunnel is lit by tall skylights, which historically served as openings for defenders to pour boiling oil, stones, and other materials on attacking enemies. Notably, some scenes from the 1952 film "The Crimson Pirate," featuring Burt Lancaster, were filmed at this castle.
Situated within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park at an elevation of 1,460 meters, the Rocca di Calascio in the province of L’Aquila is a striking medieval fortress constructed entirely of white stone.
It is one of the highest fortifications in Italy. Positioned high in the mountains, it overlooks the now-abandoned ancient village below. Its undeniable allure has made it an ideal location for several films, including the beloved "Ladyhawke" and "The Name of the Rose," as well as the more recent "The American" featuring George Clooney.
It is among the most complete and best-preserved castles in Italy. Located in Sirmione, this castle is a rare example of a lake fortification, surrounded on all sides by the waters of Lake Garda. One side features a dock, while the other boasts a towering keep with cells for prisoners. The walls and three main towers are decorated with dovetail battlements.
Visitors can explore the walkways, reach the top of the towers, and enjoy the magnificence of the dock. According to a somber love legend, the spirit of Ebengardo searches for his beloved Arice within the castle on stormy nights.
