IYC is pleased to present 43.03m (141’) classic replica S/Y Columbia for sale, listed by A.J. McDonald of the IYC Fort Lauderdale office. This beautiful classically styled schooner was built in 2014 by the Eastern Shipbuilding Group and is currently lying in Panama City, Florida, USA.
Built as a steel-hulled exact replica of the original 43.03m (141’) American-built 1923 Gloucester, MA Racing/Fishing Schooner Columbia, she is a true collector's yacht that combines history and tradition with modern shipbuilding, technologies and luxurious comfort. This is a yacht that is steeped in history that is sure to appeal to any owner admiring the classic, timeless lines of the yachts of a bygone era.
Columbia’s namesake was a classic yacht designed for speed, built at the historic A.D. Story shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts and designed by William Starling Burgess. The original Columbia proved her racing credentials, racing as a challenger in events including the International Fisherman’s Cup races in Halifax, nearly beating legendary Canadian schooner Bluenose. When the original line drawings for Columbia were rediscovered decades later, it was fate that she be rebuilt.
This stunning replica is the perfect blend of old and new, with every element – from the sail cloth to brass fittings – lovingly recreated and making use of skilled local craftsmen. Some changes were made to the original design with an engine room and staterooms added in, and the yacht was built with a steel hull instead of the original wood.
An elegant interior, with polished warm woods, complements her classic exterior, providing a luxurious retreat for guests to enjoy. A large main saloon, with formal dining, open plan galley, coffee table seating and a bar, replaces what would once have been the hold and is a welcoming, open space. Natural light flows into the saloon via a skylight above. Beautiful detailing including stunning word working, that nods to the original, is seen throughout the yacht. Columbia sleeps 12 in four cabins, with bunk style accommodation for six crew forward. Guest accommodation is styled around family living. The master and VIP have Pullmans for flexible sleeping options, complemented by two twins with bunks. Modern features have been added, including a Jacuzzi bath in the owner’s stateroom.
Impressively fast, reaching speeds of 17 knots under sail, Columbia makes an unforgettable sight when underway, giving the feeling of stepping back in time. New additions include a bow-thruster, advanced navigation systems, modern communications, entertainment equipment, and underwater lighting. Despite these additions, they are carefully hidden to maintain the original look with one example being the concealment of the navigational equipment next to her wheel. The original Columbia was built as a racing fishing vessel and her modern replica also carries fishing equipment including replicas of the on-deck fish holders. Columbia is truly a work of passion and one-of-a-kind buying opportunity.
