It quickly gaining a reputation for imaginative designs and quality craftsmanship, with private clients soon requesting their own yachts. During World War I, Abeking & Rasmussen built naval vessels – mainly minesweepers and torpedo dinghies. Since then, the yard has continued to serve all three spheres of the marine market: private, commercial and military, and has a reputation for building high-custom, award-winning superyachts. Abeking & Rasmussen is a family business that is both traditional and progressive, known for partnering with and harnessing new technologies.
Today, the yard has a solid reputation within the yachting community for detailed workmanship and luxurious superyachts. The modern shipyard facility is capable of building yachts of up to 125m, with a skilled team of craftspeople. Their builds are continuously popular on the sale and charter market and represent a strong investment for buyers.
Shipyard Specialty
The German shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen is one of the few Northern European builders exclusively building full-custom motor yacht projects for highly demanding customers. Active in the fairly niche large displacement yacht market, Abeking & Rasmussen delivers unique superyachts from 40m to 125m. Its most recent projects exceeded 2000 GT in volume.
For this reason, steel is the material of choice for hulls, and aluminum for superstructures. Clients choose to build at Abeking & Rasmussen lured by the freedom to create a one-off design, both exterior and interior. What’s more, the high level of craftsmanship and quality make Abeking & Rasmussen yachts a safe bet on the brokerage market on which they keep a high resale value.
Notable deliveries
In recent years, Abeking & Rasmussen made the headlines in the superyacht industry by delivering a few unique projects. The 98m motor yacht Aviva was the most anticipated one in 2017, equipped with its own lower deck padel tennis court. During the 2019 Monaco Yacht Show, the 80m Excellence made heads turn with her advanced exterior design and large use of glass. And delivered in 2016, the 72m full-custom explorer Cloudbreak is yet to be outdone. Among other notable projects the first 41m SWATH catamaran Nurja (ex-Silver Cloud) completed in 2008.
Design collaborations on projects
Like most ultra high-end superyacht builders, Abeking & Rasmussen has collaborated with world-class exterior and interior yacht designers. In the 2000s the A&R fleet became recognizable for its exterior design lines by Donald Starkey Designs. Both 60m yachts Scott Free and Kaiser were penned by Donald Starkey Designs. More recently, the range of designers has expanded, giving the A&R fleet more variety in terms of external style. These include, but are not limited to: Winch Design for Excellence, Harrison Eidsgaard for Elandess, Raymond Langton for Aviva, Terence Disdale for RoMEA and Espen Øino for Cloudbreak.
