Fitzroy Yachts was established in 1997 in New Plymouth, New Zealand, emerging during a period when the country was gaining global recognition for high-performance sailing yacht construction. From the outset, the shipyard focused exclusively on custom projects, carving out a niche for technically advanced aluminum sailing yachts designed for serious bluewater use rather than dockside display.

The shipyard became closely associated with New Zealand’s engineering-first approach, combining lightweight alloy construction with refined naval architecture. Fitzroy’s builds emphasized structural efficiency, balance under sail, and dependable systems, qualities valued by experienced owners seeking yachts capable of long passages and demanding conditions. Each project was treated as a one-off, shaped around the owner’s sailing priorities and cruising ambitions.

Although Fitzroy Yachts ceased production in the early 2010s, its yachts continue to be actively sailed and maintained around the world. The shipyard’s legacy remains closely tied to New Zealand’s reputation for building purposeful, performance-driven sailing yachts that prioritize function, reliability, and honest craftsmanship.
