IYC Sponsors Desmos: Supporting the Conversation on Resilience in Children and Adolescents
As part of our ongoing commitment to initiatives that create meaningful social impact, IYC was proud to support two events in Athens organized by Desmos, featuring internationally recognized clinical psychologist, educator, and bestselling author Dr. Madeline Levine.
With decades of experience working with families, schools, and adolescents, Dr. Levine is widely known for her research on child and adolescent development, modern parenting, and her work challenging traditional definitions of success beyond academic achievement and performance metrics.
Under the theme “How to raise resilient children in the context of privilege?”, the two-day program brought together parents, educators, and professionals to reflect on the evolving challenges facing children and teenagers today.

A Keynote Discussion On The Pressures Facing Young People Today
The program opened with a keynote speech held at St. Catherine’s British School in Kifisia, moderated by family psychologist Alexia Vernicos. The session explored some of the most pressing issues affecting younger generations, including rising levels of anxiety, increasing academic and social pressure, and the role of adults in supporting healthier emotional development.
A central focus of the discussion was the need to redefine success beyond grades and conventional achievement, and to better understand how parents and educators can help children build genuine resilience in an increasingly complex world.
Attendees also received a copy of Dr. Levine’s book, The Price of Privilege, which examines the hidden psychological costs of high-pressure environments in affluent contexts.
An Interactive Workshop Focused On Practical Application
The second day took place at the Athens Capital Hotel – MGallery Collection and was structured as an interactive workshop in small groups. Participants engaged in guided discussions, case studies, and practical exercises designed to translate theory into real-world application within families, schools, and everyday environments.
The session concluded with a networking lunch, encouraging continued exchange among participants and fostering dialogue across different professional and personal perspectives.
Participation in the workshop required attendance at the keynote speech, ensuring continuity between the two sessions.
Key Themes Explored
Across both events, the conversation centered on several interconnected themes, including the pressure of high-achievement culture, resilience-building in uncertain times, and the importance of preparing children for life beyond academic success and admissions pathways. Particular attention was given to the concept of “letting go” as an essential part of raising independent, emotionally balanced young adults.
A Shared Commitment To Long-Term Impact
This initiative reflects a broader effort by Desmos to contribute to meaningful conversations within Greek society around education, mental health, and the well-being of younger generations.
We are pleased to have supported this important dialogue and to have contributed to a platform where educators, parents, and specialists could exchange perspectives and practical insights on shaping a more resilient future for children and adolescents.
