Reputedly one of the five most beautiful bays in the world, Villefranche-sur-Mer is a refreshing respite between its hedonistic neighbours on the French Riviera. A stone’s throw away from the lavish peninsula of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the quieter Villefranche has maintained its low-key vibe. However, the authentic French town has a discreet elegance about it, and still attracts its share of the more discerning celebrities! A yacht charter is a way to make the most of a trip to this part of the Côte D’Azur. With beautiful cruising along the Riviera, your private hire yacht will let you pick the prettiest anchorages and quietest beaches on your own schedule. The sheltered bay is perfect for taking out the onboard toys to kayak or paddleboard around the coves and secluded beaches, then spend the evenings relaxing on the deck watching views of the citadel light up as the sunsets.
Best Time To Visit: In the top 25% of countries for weather, Villefranche is pleasant all year round. June to August are the hottest months.
Key Cruising Areas: The Côte D’Azur is filled with iconic destinations and pretty anchorages. Sail around the exclusive St Jean Cap Ferrat for some impressive views of opulent villas, and anchor in the many sunny coves or bays.
Don’t Miss: The old town is a beautiful mosaic of yellow cobbled streets and pastel walls with bright shutters, topped off by an incredibly blue sky. The Place de la Paix is one of the prettiest spots, filled with terraced cafes which live up to the name “Peace Square”.
Best Spots for Wining and Dining: From local cuisine to fine dining, Villefranche is filled with high-quality restaurants. For long, relaxed lunches head to the waterfront where the restaurants sit overlooking bobbing fishing boats and glinting yachts. Try L’Oursin Bleu for food as spectacular as the view.
Local Culture: The small town has an impressive collection of churches, centuries-old houses, and museums. Visit the 16th-century citadel to see some of the museums along with spectacular views.
Best Beach: One of the Riviera’s best beaches, the Plage des Marinièrs is where you will find the locals picnicking. The long curve of the beach is situated between the old town and dark pine forests, where the contrasting yellow umbrellas make for incredible views in every direction.
IYC recommends: Spend an afternoon touring the vineyard of Château de Crémat. While a visit to the château would be worth it for the beautiful grounds and views of the castle alone, the wine is excellent, and much is not sold anywhere other than the cellar door. Be sure to buy a case to take home!
