Some of the most incredible destinations on the West Coast of America are found along California’s coastline. From tranquil bays to bustling harbors, secluded islands to iconic landmarks, and city living to nature spots, there are a whole host of experiences and landscapes to discover on a yacht charter in California.
Whether you want to cruise the popular locations like San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles or the less frequented areas of Avila Beach, the Channel Islands, and Santa Barabara, there is a spot for everyone to enjoy here.
Our expert charter and sales consultants, all native to California, have put together some of their top recommendations on where to go, what to do, and what to see when cruising the coastline of California.
California is brimming with vibrant coastal cities offering diverse experiences for a yacht charter here. San Francisco is ideal for a sailing yacht charter, thanks to its windy conditions within the bay.
The city boasts many iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and the historic Fisherman’s Wharf. While the entertainment capital of Los Angeles hosts glamorous beaches, world-class dining, and that Hollywood allure.
In close proximity to the city and Venice Beach is Marina del Rey, one of the largest man-made small-boat marinas in the world. More laid-back and further south is San Diego. Traci Hughes, sales and charter consultant, says: “San Diego is a major yachting hub with a beautiful harbor, rich maritime history, and diverse waterfront attractions with easy access to both coastal and offshore adventures.”
Cruising any coastline means opportunities for wildlife, but the California coastline has a diverse array of marine life. Sales consultant Kenny Bonilla explains: “On any given day, you can spot dolphins, porpoises, a variety of whales, tailing swordfish, marlin, and schools of bluefin tuna feeding.
I have had clients onboard love experiencing the marine life activity along the California coastline.” The waters off California are also renowned for numerous whale species; Monterey Bay is particularly great for whale-watching opportunities. “Whale watching is one of the things that make cruising California so unique compared to other US yachting destinations,” adds sales support Patricia Gibbons.
One Californian coastline gem is the Channel Islands National Park, hailed as ‘The Galapagos Islands of the North.’ They offer fantastic diversity and unique landscapes, flora, and fauna. Thanks to the accessibility, this volcanic chain of eight islands is a must for any yacht charter on the California coastline. Hughes comments that the Channel Islands are “a popular getaway with clear waters, scenic coves, and charming towns on Santa Catalina Island like Avalon and Two Harbours.”
There are excellent chances for diving, snorkeling, and other watersports adventures here from the yacht. While Santa Catalina is one of the more popular islands, Bonilla says: “There are a few smaller islands north of Catalina Island that are true hidden gems; they offer beautiful blue and clear anchorages and great fishing grounds during certain times of the year.”
The sun-drenched shores of California give rise to plenty of beaches to explore on a yacht charter. There are endless varieties, from picturesque coves ideal for anchoring in golden sands for relaxation to those with perfect breaks for surfing. Hughes recommends Emerald Bay, which has clear waters and a sheltered harbor, providing perfect conditions for yachting; dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches can be enjoyed.
Slightly further north is Newport Beach, a prime beach destination known for its surfing culture. In the bay of San Diego is Coronado Island, here you will find the historic Hotel del Coronado as well as plenty of beautiful beaches to relax on.
California’s coastal cuisine offers yacht charter clients a diverse selection of experiences. From fresh seafood to farm-to-table experiences, the state’s food scene focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The specialties include clam chowder, spot prawns, innovative sushi dishes, and of course the renowned avocado toast.
Alongside the variety in tastes, there are also plenty of dining options to suit every mood, from fine dining and upscale in Malibu to the more casual and relaxed scenes of San Diego. According to sales consultant Eric Pearson: “Each harbor along the coast has guest slips with plenty of waterfront restaurants nearby.” And, for those interested in wine, California doesn’t disappoint, with Santa Barbara famous for its vibrant wine scene.
