Tropical Secrets

Discover the Caribbean and The Bahamas away from peak season crowds, where long days, clear waters, and exciting adventures await this summer.

Summer in the Caribbean and The Bahamas has long stayed under the radar for many charter guests, a well-kept secret. But for those in the know, wanting to reap the benefits these months offer, the typically off-peak season can be some of the best times. Trade winds drift gently, the seas are calm, and the islands invite you to enjoy seclusion. It’s no surprise that many of the IYC fleet remain throughout the season.

Outside the winter crowds, summer cruising offers far more privacy and freedom. You can anchor in secluded bays, indulge in beach picnics on empty stretches of sand, dive into the vivid underwater world, and enjoy watersports in emptier waters. Add to this year-round cruising grounds, favorable charter rates, and longer days, and summer is a standout choice.

Captain Chris Crabaugh from 161’ (49m) DIRT POOR, one of the many IYC charter yachts based in the Caribbean during summer, explains: “Cruising the Caribbean and The Bahamas during the summer season can bring a lot of opportunity to enjoy the special moments and environments without all the extra hustle and bustle of peak season.”

Get Away From Crowds

One of summer’s biggest advantages is the space, both at anchor and ashore. With fewer yachts cruising the Caribbean and The Bahamas during these months, the regions have a more personal feel. “Beaches are less crowded, bars are less packed, and adventures are less booked, meaning more availability,” notes Captain Crabaugh.

Enjoying anchorages on your own terms naturally invites more exploration. St Vincent and the Grenadines are a particular favorite for these summer season discoveries, where yachts such as the 149’ (45m) NORMA JEAN anchor in remote and uninhabited spots like the Tobago Cays, offering a side of the Caribbean the winter crowd rarely experience.

Captain Gavin Hurn from 164’ (50m) SECOND LOVE also agrees with this summer appeal: “Cruising in the summer months benefits charter guests, allowing them to take the best from the islands.” He adds: “When clients come away to enjoy a luxury vacation, it’s all about the exclusivity and freedom of not being around other people.”

Nowhere is this more apparent than in The Bahamas, where shallow and secluded anchorages are aplenty. “The great thing about The Bahamas is that it offers nearly 365 days of cruising; there are so many hidden gems and a wide range of cruising opportunities,” adds Captain Hurn.

Flexibility, Freedom, and Fleet Variety

In these emptier waters, summer also brings favorable weather - calmer seas and gentler trade winds present a new layer of flexibility for yacht chartering. The summer conditions make it possible to venture further and enjoy activities that rely on more settled conditions, from snorkeling the reefs to kitesurfing across remote sandbars.

“The summer months are much more enjoyable with the longer days,” explains Captain Hurn. “It allows a much higher angle of the sun overhead for diving and snorkeling, and the gentle breeze makes conditions ideal for exploring more challenging and exciting locations that may be inaccessible during winter.”

This freedom is enabled by the diversity of the IYC fleet operating throughout the Caribbean and The Bahamas. Depending on the guest list and itinerary plans, summer cruising yachts range from the 88’ (27m) SQUALO to the 224’ (68m) SYCARA V, accommodating a range of groups.

Whether you choose the timeless American classic, the 124’ (38m) BLU, based year-round in St. Martin, or the brand-new 123’ (37m) AD ASTRA, the shallow-draft Moonen, which is perfectly suited to The Bahamas, there is a yacht to match every trip. From adventure-seekers to family-friendly yachts, each of which can offer the best of summer cruising.

Although June marks the official hurricane season, it shouldn’t deter summer cruising, with the early part of the season mostly calm. With careful planning, experienced crews, and advanced weather tracking, the fleet provides guests with peace of mind that the Caribbean will remain enjoyable and safe in summer.

“The majority of the Caribbean sits in the hurricane belt, but the good news is that with so much advanced technology in weather tracking these days, we get early detections and can make adjustments for safe passage and protection,” reassures Captain Crabaugh.

He adds: “Hurricanes also tend to form stronger and more intense further West than the Antilles and the areas most guests dream of exploring, meaning the destinations we focus on remain accessible year-round.” There are also many Caribbean islands outside the hurricane belt that are exciting to cruise, such as the ABCs, which offer year-round cruising.

Cool Off With Waterborne Adventures

“During the summer, it can get hot and humid, which makes it the perfect time to enjoy water-based adventures,” highlights Captain Crabaugh. Across the Caribbean and Bahamas, the IYC fleet is exceptionally well-equipped, boasting an extensive collection of water toys for both high-energy days and relaxed exploration.

The BVIs are a prime example of summer cruising at its best, with noticeably quieter anchorages creating ideal conditions for paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and snorkelling. Summer is also an excellent season for diving, with some of the clearest water visibility. Captain Hurn notes: “Diving is such an important part of exploring these islands, both throughout the Caribbean and in The Bahamas, which offer an incredible variety of reefs, wrecks, and other exciting adventures.”

Caribbean locations like Bonaire’s reefs and below St Lucia’s pitons are top-notch diving destinations. For more advanced dives, Saba and Statia are world-class locations offering dramatic underwater scenery and wrecks. The Bahamas, especially Tiger Beach and Andros, are also renowned for scuba and snorkelling, which include shark encounters, iconic blue holes, shallow wrecks, vibrant reefs, and exceptional visibility.

The summer months also bring exciting fishing opportunities. Yachts in the fleet, like the 150’ (46m) AVALON, cruising The Bahamas, have strong fishing capabilities with optional big-game upgrades. “If you’re an avid angler or wish to explore that, the summer months bring some great fishing for mahi, wahoo, marlin, and tuna - all are an exciting opportunity to fish for and an even more exciting catch,” comments Captain Crabaugh.

Embrace Authentic Island Life

Across the Caribbean and The Bahamas, summer is when the islands come alive with local culture, vibrant festivals, and energy ashore. Celebrations are in full swing during these months. With fewer crowds, towns and markets offer a closer connection to the local way of life, traditions, and communities.

“The Bahamas has its famous Carnival, which includes Junkanoo bands in May, which is always a fun experience,” notes Captain Crabaugh. In July, Antigua and St Lucia also host their carnivals, featuring week-long parades, colorful costumes, and feasts. Toward the end of July in the BVIs, the Emancipation Festival offers insight into local pride, music, and tradition. And, at the end of the sugar cane harvest in August, Barbados welcomes its lively Crop Over festival, a week of live music and street celebrations.

Even among these island festivals, summer remains much quieter ashore than the peak season for other island-based activities, creating plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoor pursuits on the trails, variety of excursions, and restaurants and bars without the crowds, resulting in a more authentic experience and a chance to appreciate the island’s true summer spirit.
