Admiral Yachts has been shaping Italian yachtbuilding since 1966. From its origins as a wooden cruiser builder, the shipyard has grown into the flagship brand of The Italian Sea Group. Based in Marina di Carrara, Admiral operates from a 120,000 sqm facility and specializes in fully custom and semi-custom superyachts ranging from 121’5” (37m) to over 328’1” (100m). Over 150 deliveries have left its docks, built in steel or aluminium and spanning displacement, semi-displacement, and planing configurations.
Design and performance go hand in hand across Admiral’s portfolio. The shipyard collaborates with leading names in exterior and interior design, including Luca Dini, Tim Heywood, Azure Yacht Design, and Giorgio Armani Studio. Shipyard History
The Italian Sea Group’s flagship yard, Admiral has built a large number of yachts since it was founded in 1962. A highly respected Italian superyacht builder strongly believes in the quality and attention to detail that ‘Made in Italy’ represents and is always evolving its offering through design, production and systems. At its large, modern facility, Admiral builds aluminum and steel yachts up to 100m. Both Admiral and the Italian Sea Group pride themselves on offering a luxury experience, made up of quality, attention to detail, design, art and innovation in one bespoke package.
Admiral follows strict quality standards throughout the yacht building procedure, beginning with the design process. Attention to detail is important, and this is a philosophy that extends throughout the entire construction procedure. “The attention to detail at every step guarantees efficiency and quality,” is a philosophy that sits at the heart of the yard. Over 25 interior designers work in the Italian Sea Group’s design team, helping to realize every owner’s bespoke vision and making use of luxurious and prestigious materials. Extensive investment into the yard has resulted in a world-class facility.
Shipyard Specialty
In the 1950s, Admiral Yachts began the production of wooden motor yachts in Lavagna. Both the Admiral brand and model range expanded during the 60s and 70s. The first 30m Admiral yacht launched in the early 70s. In the late 70s, the Cantieri Navali Lavagna began building full aluminium yachts. Since then, Admiral's fleet has increased in size with projects reaching 100m.
The Admiral brand has always been associated with Italian style and sportiveness. Admiral Yachts has formed part of The Italian Sea Group since 2009, alongside Tecnomar.
Admiral's historical facility was moved from Lavagna to Marina di Carrara. The Admiral shipyard now focuses on building semi-custom and full-custom motor yachts with steel and aluminium hulls. Admiral's wide model range allows buyers to opt for different hull configurations from fast to long range to high volume: planing, semi-displacement or full displacement. The current yard's size range for motor yachts stretches from 37 to 100m.
Notable deliveries and models
The Italian Sea Group’s takeover of Admiral was regarded as an opportunity to revive the iconic Italian shipyard. Admiral’s rebrand was kickstarted with the launch of new and larger models: Regale, C-Force, Impero, Maxima and later the Momentum and S-Force model lines. The first yacht from The Italian Sea Group era was the 40m CACOS V (now MAVERICK), the first Impero, delivered in 2013. Many other launches followed, such as the 37.3m NONO (now SAFE HAVEN), which won at the 2015 World Superyacht Awards, and the 50m OURANOS.
The shipyard accepted the challenge to build a 73.2m explorer, which was delivered in 2018 under the name of PLANET NINE. The 2020 launch of the 55.2m GECO, the first S-Force 55, was a big milestone for Admiral in terms of creating a new benchmark in the yachting industry. In late 2021, Admiral went a step further in innovative exterior design with the launch of the 75.2m KENSHŌ, which became the largest Admiral at her delivery and was named Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2023 World Superyacht Awards. She was followed by the 77.7m AMALYA (ex-Project Blue Marlin), delivered in 2025.
Design collaborations on models and projects
Admiral yachts’ distinctive exterior style has been largely penned by Italian designers Luca Dini and Paolo Caliari: Caliari shaped earlier Admiral models, while Luca Dini designed the Impero and Regale lines. In-house, The Italian Sea Group’s art director Gian Marco Campanino created the Momentum series and the S-Force 55, and Giorgio Armani designed the interiors of the second S-Force 55, the 55m SILVER STAR I.
Large new build projects at the Marina di Carrara facility reach up to 100m and have increased the involvement of external designers, such as Winch Design for the 100m Hull 597 (ex-Project Titanium), Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design for AMALYA, Azure Yacht Design with archineers.berlin for KENSHŌ, whose interiors by Jouin Manku won Best Interior Design (Motor Yachts 500GT and above) at the 2023 BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards, and Tim Heywood for PLANET NINE.
