Albania Yacht Charter Guide

Bordering Montenegro to the north and Greece to the south, Albania offers one of the remaining unspoiled Mediterranean destinations for yacht chartering. An intriguing 400-kilometer-plus coastline, where rugged natural beauty is bordered by the clear Ionian Sea, combined with a sense of true discovery, far from the crowds. Long kept under the radar following decades of isolation, the country has recently evolved as a yachting destination, with the Albanian Riviera as the highlight.

Stretching from Vlore to Sarande, where limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and turquoise waters invite adventurous yachting, alongside developing infrastructure. More peaceful and tranquil than traditional Mediterranean spots, itineraries hug the coastline with short hops in between, offering relaxed cruising through charming towns, intriguing history, rich, layered culture, and dramatic landscapes. On top of the offerings, the warmth of Albanian hospitality and the quiet exclusivity found here make for some of the most exciting and emerging yacht charter experiences.

Best Time To Visit: The season spans from May to October, as in other Mediterranean destinations, with peak summer in July and August, when the weather is hottest.

Key Cruising Areas: Cruise the main yacht charter stretch of the Albanian Riviera, between Vlore and Sarande. A short hop away are the Greek Ionian Islands and the closest, Corfu, offering a multi-destination itinerary.

Don’t Miss: At Himare, take an early evening trip ashore before sunset and hike up to the impressive Himare Castle, an ancient Bronze Age citadel that rewards those who climb with panoramic views across the Ionian.

Best Spots For Wining And Dining: Inland, within the capital of Tirana, chefs are redeveloping the country’s culinary scene, with multiple fine-dining options. Near the coast in Dhermi, Zoe Hora, this Albanian luxury retreat, has gained recognition for its modern take on regional dishes.

Best Local Dish: Albanian cuisine is closely linked to recipes passed down through generations. Tave Kosi is one of the most iconic, a baked dish of lamb and yoghurt. Along the Riviera, grilled and local seafood are highlights; local dishes include Supe Peshku (fish soup).

Local Culture: For exceptionally well-preserved ruins and to discover the country’s layered history and culture, head to the UNESCO-protected Butrint to explore this archeological site in the forested coastal landscape.

Best Beach: Often dubbed the “Maldives of Europe,” Ksamil is Albania’s laid-back and most iconic beach destination, with crystal-clear shallows, soft white sands, and small offshore islands easily accessible by tender.

IYC Recommends: Enjoy a secluded beach setup at the spectacular Gjipe Beach, and picnic ashore courtesy of your yacht’s crew. The calm waters here are perfect for a relaxing day and playing with all the yacht’s toys.
