Monthly Escapes: Where To Go Yachting In October?

October is one of those sweet-spot months for a yachting vacation. The high-season crowds have thinned, the summer heat has cooled, and in many corners of the world the seas are calm and welcoming.

From the Mediterranean to the Caribbean and beyond, this is a time when good weather, striking landscapes, and local culture come together in perfect balance. Here are some of IYC’s favourite destinations to consider for an October charter.

The Mediterranean

Greece
October brings a quieter, more intimate side to Greece’s islands. The Cyclades, Ionian, and Dodecanese are far less crowded, making it easier to find secluded anchorages and private beaches. Temperatures hover between 20–25°C, and the sea is pleasantly warm at 21–23°C. Summer’s strong Meltemi winds give way to gentle breezes, ideal for cruising from Santorini to Corfu. This is also harvest season, and grape festivals, olive picking, and traditional celebrations provide a genuine taste of local life.

Italy
From the Amalfi Coast to Sardinia and the Aeolian Islands, Italy’s coastal charm endures well into autumn. Air temperatures range from 18–25°C, with the sea around 22–24°C. With fewer tourists, you can enjoy historic towns, authentic cuisine, and dramatic scenery without the summer rush. Winds are generally light to moderate, creating relaxed conditions for exploring the coastline.

Croatia
October transforms Croatia’s Adriatic coast into a haven of tranquillity. Islands such as Solta, Kornati, and Mljet feel almost private, with air temperatures of 20–23°C and sea temperatures of 18–20°C. Dubrovnik, Split, and Trogir are easier to explore without the crowds, while local harvest festivals add a seasonal charm. Steady winds make it ideal for both leisurely cruising and adventurous island hopping.

Turkey
The Turkish Riviera, from Bodrum to Göcek, is at its most welcoming in October. Temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 20–27°C, with the sea at 23–25°C. Summer’s strong Meltemi winds calm, replaced by steady, gentle breezes perfect for discovering hidden coves, ancient ruins, and fishing villages. Marmaris International Race Week in late October brings a lively, local flavour to the coast.

Canary Islands
Mild and sunny year-round, the Canaries offer perfect conditions in October. Air temperatures sit between 22–26°C, with the sea around 22–24°C. Northeasterly trade winds are moderate, particularly around Tenerife and Gran Canaria, creating ideal conditions for spotting whales and dolphins or enjoying relaxed cruising between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The Caribbean

British Virgin Islands
Warm and inviting, the BVIs offer daytime temperatures of 27–30°C, with the sea at 28°C. October’s lighter crowds make it a perfect time to explore Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, or the wreck of the RMS Rhone. Trade winds of 10–15 knots provide steady, manageable sailing conditions.

Grenadines
From the Tobago Cays to Bequia and Mustique, the Grenadines are at their best in October. Calm seas and moderate trade winds make swimming with turtles, kayaking mangroves, or kitesurfing at Union Island an effortless pleasure. The quieter season allows for a more personal connection with these idyllic islands.

Antigua
October is Antigua at its most relaxed. With warm seas at 28°C and steady northeast trade winds, it’s an excellent month for yachting. Off-season yacht charter deals and small local festivals add charm, while the island’s 365 beaches are all the more enjoyable without the crowds.

Indian Ocean & Southeast Asia

Thailand
October marks the transition from monsoon to dry season. Temperatures range from 25–31°C, with the sea around 28°C. Popular destinations like Phang Nga Bay, Phuket, and the Phi Phi Islands are quieter, offering peaceful cruising amid limestone cliffs, coral reefs, and vibrant local life. Winds are light to moderate, providing safe, enjoyable conditions for exploring.

Seychelles
With 115 islands to explore, the Seychelles is a dream in October. Air temperatures of 25–30°C and sea temperatures of 26–28°C combine with light to moderate winds for calm sailing. Brief tropical showers are rare and usually short-lived, leaving plenty of time to spot giant tortoises, rare birds, and playful dolphins.

South Pacific

New Zealand
Spring arrives in October, bringing mild temperatures (15–22°C) and fewer tourists. The Bay of Islands and Marlborough Sounds offer predictable, moderate winds (10–20 knots) and rich opportunities to spot dolphins, seals, and penguins. The season provides a fresh, invigorating way to discover New Zealand’s stunning coastline.
