IYC’s What’s On In November 2019

30th October 2019
It is suddenly November and Christmas and the New Year are already fast approaching. However, there is still plenty to be enjoyed before the holiday festivities take over, including a range of glitzy events in the worlds of sports, arts and fashion, and of course the all-important American celebration of Thanksgiving.
Sports

Not to be missed is the hotly anticipated Melbourne Cup Carnival in the vibrant city of Melbourne, Australia from 2 – 9 November. This fast paced horse racing event is the place to see and be seen in the Southern Hemisphere, so expect high stakes and high fashion. However, if you prefer four wheels to four legs, head instead to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which runs from 29 November – 1 December. This F1 event is held at twilight, creating a magical racing atmosphere on Yas Island. The fun continues at the Yas Arena, where concerts are held each night. With a range of VIP options, expect excellent hospitality and a lot of glamour.

Arts and Culture

One of the most important dates in the Thai Calendar, Loi Krathong Festival takes place in Thailand on 13 November. This stunning cultural event, known as the “Festival of Lights” celebrates the meeting of culture with the water. Traditionally, a raft decorated with flowers, incense and candles is set afloat, taking the mistakes of the past year with it. As night falls, take in the spectacular sight of thousands of candles floating across the water, and paper lanterns rising up into the sky.

Fashion

November is the month where the world of fashion celebrates the ‘accessory’, with a number of international events celebrating the very best watches and jewelry. The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Geneve (GPHG) is a celebration of the very finest creations in the watchmaking sector, with a prizegiving held on 7 November at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Having already visited Bangkok, Mexico and Sydney, the travelling exhibition of the finalist watches will arrive in Geneva’s Musée d’Art et d’Histoire (MAH) for display from 1 – 14 of November with an exclusive opening cocktail party, before travelling on to Dubai to be displayed as part of the Dubai Watch Week from 20 – 24 November. Admire these masterpieces of watch design with offerings from Hermes, Bvlgari, Chopard and more. An IYC favorite is the stunning Ulysse Nardin Marine Mega Yacht timepiece, built in the same spirit as a luxury superyacht. Also in Dubai is the VOD Dubai International Jewellery Show, held from 13 – 16 of November. Here you will find haute couture brands, catwalks and of course, a lot of sparkle.

Yachting

Despite it being a quieter time of year in yachting, there are still events to be found. In Florida, with the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) just over, the social Miami Yacht Rendezvous, a star-studded fundraising event, runs from 7 – 9 November. Across the pond in Europe, Amsterdam is host to METSTRADE from 18– 21 November, where industry professionals will gather to see the latest technologies that the marine sector has to offer.

Travel

Escape the cold dark nights this November with a trip to the Caribbean - the perfect place to spend a truly memorable Thanksgiving. Spend the days reconnecting as a family, enjoying watersports, snorkeling and sunbathing, then sit down to enjoy an al fresco Thanksgiving feast, expertly prepared by your crew. With all this, plus blue skies, clear waters, stunning beaches, you will have plenty to feel thankful for.
