Portofino Yacht Charter Guide

Once a tiny fishing village, the picturesque town of Portofino has become known as a true jewel of the Ligurian Coast. The combination of rustic cobbled streets, high-end shopping, art galleries, and historic sites make Portofino a unique town just waiting to be explored. In summer colourful fishing boats moor side-by-side with magnificent yachts as the Portofino superyacht crowd glide into port. Yacht rental is the best way to experience the Cinque Terre; take in the dramatic views of cliff-top villages, rocky coastlines, and incredible azure waters, while enjoying a glass of local Ormeasco from your luxury charter.

Best Time To Visit: Temperatures are pleasant all year round, but spring and autumn promise hot days without too much humidity.

Key Cruising Areas: Portofino is an ideal base to sail along the Cinque Terre, which boasts some of the most dramatic coastal scenery you are likely to experience. Small villages sit atop sheer cliffs, their pastel walls creating a striking image against the lush fields surrounding them.

Don’t Miss: Take your snorkel or diving gear and head out to the Cristo degli Abissi – a submerged bronze statue that sits 56 feet beneath the waves, surrounded by colourful coral and shoals of fish.

Best Spots for Wining and Dining: Being a fishing village, the harbour is the place to find the freshest fish and most elegant restaurants. Da Puny is arguably the best, with excellent food, alfresco seating, and a celebrity guest list. Make the most of the incredibly fresh seafood and try the Fritto Misto.

Best Local Dish: For local fare not adapted to tourists’ tastes, head to one of the many trattorias and try baby octopus stewed in tomatoes with white wine. You will be surprised by how tender and tasty it is!

Local Culture: Visit one of the churches in Portofino for a taste of the history; the San Martino church was built in the 12th century and holds a rare 400-year-old organ. For some contrast follow this with a trip to the contemporary sculptures in the park below the Church of Saint George, complemented by stunning views of the city.

Best Beach: Take your tender around to San Fruttuoso. Green hills rise almost from the sea, where a Benedictine abbey sits now partially buried by the beach. A stunning sight! Take a walk through the forest then cool off in the cerulean waters.

IYC recommends: Walk from the harbour to the lighthouse for a view back over the town. Once you’ve worked up an appetite head to the legendary Hotel Splendido for an elegant meal with unparalleled views of the Ligurian Sea.
