Portovenere Yacht Charter Guide

Set in a stretch of water known as the Gulf of Poets, Portovenere is the quintessential Ligurian destination that will bring out the hopeless romantic in anyone who visits. Set in the most beautiful area of the Ligurian Coast, the town is surrounded by charming hamlets and pretty villages, making for stunning sailing, with the famous towns of Cinque Terre just a few miles away. Set in a protected marine area, the many species of coral, protected species, and caves make the waters around Portovenere an underwater paradise for scuba diving and snorkeling. On a luxury yacht charter to the Gulf of Poets, you can explore the grottos and caves of the region, return for lunch prepared by your onboard chef, or sail between ports to experience the local culture of the many attractive villages. The choice is yours and private boat hire from the IYC fleet will ensure that you can design your perfect Italian getaway.

Best Time To Visit: April – October, although the sea is warm enough for swimming by June.

Key Cruising Areas: The Archipelago of Portovenere is set on the steep, green-hilled coast of the Gulf of La Spezia, dotted with pastel-coloured buildings, unique ports, golden beaches, and sheltered anchorages.

Don’t Miss: Byron Grotto is one of the most famous sights of Portovenere. Named after the poet, the grotto can only be reached by boat. Travel by tender to see the natural caves, and incredible waters that turn a kaleidoscope of greens, blues, and purples in the late day sun.

Best Spots for Wining and Dining: For the freshest fish and an incredible setting, take your tender out to Palmaria Island. Enjoy spectacular views and fantastic food at the restaurant Locanda Lorena. Book a table after sunset and try the legendary spaghetti alla Giuseppe accompanied with recommended local wine.

Best Local Dish: Mostarda is a relish of fruit and mustard from North Italy. Order the excellent regional cheese selection with mostarda at the restaurant of the Grand Hotel Portovenere.

Local Culture: Overlooking the Gulf, the Church of St Pietro is not to be missed. In Genoese Gothic style, the interior is remarkable and during August it becomes a spectacular sight when the slope up to the church is lit up by burning torches to celebrate the White Madonna.

Best Beach:  The only true sandy beach on the Cinque Terre, the nearby beach of Monterosso al Mare is an idyllic place with white sands and turquoise waters headed by impressive rock formations at either end. Grab a gelato or Aperol spritzer from Gelateria La Scogliera and walk along the promenade for a breathtaking view of Il Gigante.

IYC recommends: The coastal path between Portovenere and Riomaggiore is incredibly scenic and offers some of the best views of the bay. Spend an afternoon walking the track and have your yacht meet you at the village with a delicious lunch prepared.
