Propriano encompasses everything that Corsica is known and loved for – rugged mountain peaks, beautiful beaches, wonderfully intertwined with the luxury of the Mediterranean, Michelin-star restaurants, and resorts fit for the superyacht clientele that glide into the glamorous marina. In a land of contrasts, old meets new as seamlessly as beaches meet ancient tropical rainforests. Propriano is an excellent destination for a yacht charter, with lovely ports and plenty of bays to make use of your yacht’s onboard toys. Sail around the island exploring the villages and intriguing historical sites, then return to your yacht to float atop a sea so blue that it inspired Matisse’s passion for color. In the artist’s words, here, everything glistens.
Key Cruising Areas:
The island and neighboring Sardinia have endless beautiful beaches, ports and national parks to explore. Propriano is also well situated as the start of a Balearics cruise or to sail the coast and archipelago of Tuscany.
Don’t Miss:
Possibly the most Corsican of Corsican towns, Sarténe is just a short drive inland from Propriano. A fantastic cultural and culinary destination, the town is surrounded by spectacular scenery. Spend a day visiting the museums, local shops and stop for a coffee in the Place Porta amongst the chatter of Corsican accents.
Best Spots for Wining and Dining:
The waterfront is undoubtedly the best place to dine with excellent restaurant choices and a view out to the gulf that offers incredible sunsets. Try the Michelin recommended cuisine at Terra Cotta for fresh, gourmet food.
Local Culture:
Propriano is full of beautiful sites for cultural enthusiasts. Wander around archaeological sites filled with tombs and standing stones, view the 8,000-year-old Filitosa statue, or visit one of the museums – the nearby Sarténe Museum has an impressive collection documenting Corsican history over the past 10,000 years.
Best Beach:
The island is surrounded by beautiful beaches, and the area of the Gulf of Propriano is no exception. Difficult to access by land, Baracci beach maintains the feel of a private beach. Natural boulders form miniature caves, and the crystal clear water touches golden sand with a backdrop of green mountains.
IYC recommends:
The diversity of the landscape of Corsica is outstanding. Take a tour inland from the port south to the Lion de Roccapina. Drive from beaches through lush forest and scrubland and, on reaching Col de Corallim follow the walking trail to the beach. Time it right and you will see the famous rock formations glow red as they are lit up by the setting sun, then stop in the Coralli restaurant for a beautiful meal with views of the reef.
