Where The World Chartered A Yacht In Summer 2026 - And Where To Go In 2027
Every yacht charter season depicts how people want to spend their time on the water, and summer 2026 was no different. Once again, the Mediterranean dominated, accounting for 83% of confirmed charters; within that, the East led with 43% of global bookings, and the West was close behind at 40%.
The 2026 summer season confirmed there is no single formula for a successful yacht charter. Greece and the French Riviera continued to attract many clients, but the booking patterns show that clients approached planning an East Mediterranean summer differently from a West Mediterranean one.
Drawing from the latest IYC data and insights from our expert charter consultants, we take a look at what happened during the 2026 summer and what that may mean for summer 2027 yacht charters:
Greece Remained The Summer Favorite
Greece remained the leading yacht charter destination of the season, accounting for 27% of all bookings. But the appeal of this Eastern Mediterranean hotspot is less about one particular place and more about the range of experiences it offers to yacht charter clients, which is why it suits so many different guests.
The Cyclades are still the classic choice for those who are seeking beautiful beaches, lively island hopping, and excellent restaurant offerings. While the Ionian is a natural fit for family-friendly vacations, with greener landscapes and quieter, more sheltered cruising.
Close to Athens, the Saronic Gulf typically works well for shorter trips with several islands in close proximity. For those wanting culture and history, Greece delivers, but the Dodecanese especially draws in those looking for a culture-heavy itinerary. And the Sporades offer a quieter alternative for those who want to get more off the well-trodden path.
Choosing between the Greek islands is generally a question of how you want the days to feel and what you are looking to focus your yacht charter itinerary on.
France And Italy Lead Western Mediterranean Demand
The Western Mediterranean accounted for 40% of summer 2026 bookings, led by two destinations with different characteristics. The French Riviera took 18%, driven by the region’s best-known hotspots of Monaco, Antibes, Cannes, Nice and Saint-Tropez.
The draw for charter guests is a combination of glamorous beach clubs, short cruising distances, luxury shopping, nightlife and a full calendar of events. It is a destination full of energy, concentrated in a compact and popular stretch of coastline.
Italy followed with 16%; Those chartering in Italy are typically drawn by its cuisine, culture and opportunities for exploration. Compared to the French Riviera, Italy and its islands tend to appeal to those seeking greater privacy and a more immersive cruising experience, with less emphasis on the social scene. The two destinations complement each other well, partly explaining why the West held such a strong position.
What Was New? Beyond The Classics
Summer 2026 also highlighted an appetite for choosing yacht charter itineraries away from the most established routes. Rather than forgoing the Mediterranean’s best-known spots, clients are increasingly embracing ways to experience them differently. In particular, combining iconic spots with quieter islands and less-visited anchorages with alternative cruising routes.
Within Greece, the Ionian emerged as a growing interest, offering a different perspective. The sheltered waters and more relaxed pace are a perfect antidote to the ever-popular and busier Cyclades.
Aside from the Mediterranean, the Summer 2026 Charter Report: Where To Go In 2027 | IYC and New England represented 3% of summer bookings, with both regions seeing booking activity build from the start of the year. These yachting destinations offer a different style of summer charter. With the year-round Bahamas archipelago providing sunshine, endless cays, shallow waters and relaxed cruising on a charter. And New England offering a quintessential US summer with plenty of island-hopping and various activities ashore.
When Did Clients Book Summer Charters?
Booking activity was relatively evenly distributed across the summer 2026 season, building steadily from January. Volumes peaked between May and July, with June the strongest month. East Mediterranean clients tended to plan further ahead than those heading west. For Greece, earlier planning is especially important for guests who want a specific yacht and particular dates in such popular cruising areas, as these options get booked first.
Demand for the French Riviera and Italy ran on shorter lead times. Availability still cannot be taken for granted, especially as it varies by yacht, dates, and destinations, but the summer 2026 data suggest that clients chartering in the West made decisions closer to the departure date.
What Is The Outlook For Summer 2027?
The 2026 season offers a few practical ideas for anyone thinking about chartering a yacht for summer 2027. Firstly, think beyond the obvious itineraries. Greece is popular, but it has so many cruising areas that are completely different from one another; rather than picking the iconic routes, build your itinerary around your interests.
As important as where you are cruising is, it also matters that you have the right yacht. Yacht quality and onboard experience can make or break a charter. Think about what you want from the charter, whether that is lots of outdoor space, water toys, wellness facilities, entertainment, a family-friendly layout, or particular cruising capability. The best yacht choice depends on how you intend to spend your time.
The 2026 data suggest that the East Mediterranean demand runs on a longer lead time than the West. For 2027, clients who want a specific yacht, peak season dates, or a popular destination will benefit from booking and planning early.
