South of Miami, the Florida Keys are a group of low-lying coral islands found flung off the coast linked by a single highway and selection of bridges. Spanning for over 180 miles and boasting 800 keys, with only 30 populated, they are a yacht charter paradise. Offering a variety of coastal activities and natural beauty, the Keys present a wealth of experiences. Divided into five distinct regions, each with its own character, there are many opportunities for a yachting vacation. From enjoying the underwater marine life and resident turtles and dolphins, the natural parks ashore, and sandy beaches to the historical sites, luxury boutiques, and lively nightlife. You will be spoilt for choice with hundreds of anchorages, surrounded by mangroves and sandbars dotted within the turquoise waters, providing the perfect backdrop for the best sunsets witnessed from the deck.
Best Time To Visit: The optimal yachting season here runs from December to May.
Key Cruising Areas: Key Largo has the best diving and snorkeling options, as well as America's first underwater park. For activities above the water, the uninhabited islands of Marquesas Keys are perfect for relaxation and watersports. Meanwhile, Key West is an area where you can sample the nightlife and restaurant scene.
Don't Miss: Anchor off Hawks Cay resort to interact with friendly bottlenose dolphins as part of the Dolphin Connection program and learn about the importance of their conservation.
Best Spots for Wining and Dining: The Keys are home to unique cuisine fusing Caribbean and Cuban influences, with various restaurants. On Sunset Key, Latitude is one of the most exclusive options, located on a private island with locally sourced and seasonal menus.
Best Local Dish: Originating in Key West in the late 1800s when fresh diary was hard to come by, be sure to try a slice of Key lime pie at none other than the Key Lime Pie bakery while here.
Local Culture: For centuries, writers have been drawn to the Keys, drawing inspiration from the island's homes and surroundings. The island's literary history is still evident, and today, it claims more writers per capita than any other US city.
Best Beach: A perfect spot to drop anchor for its incredible stretch of beach is Boca Grande Key. On the western side is the stunning sandbar, enabling you to play out your own idyllic castaway afternoon.
IYC recommends: Extending another 100 kilometers west from Key West is the collection of the national park-protected islets of Dry Tortugas. Ironically, only 1% is dry land; this open water and remote paradise is perfect for cruising and offers some of the best snorkeling, a historic lighthouse, and sea turtle spotting.
